Teacher Preparation

The Teacher Preparation Program prepares students for the following careers:

THESE ARE COMMON CAREERS IN TEACHING...

Public school teaching. The Virginia teaching license is reciprocal with 47 other states and U.S. territories. Public schools cover an enormous diversity of schools including charter and magnet schools.

Private school teaching. Students can also choose to work in private schools, which may be parochial or independent. These schools seek out licensed teachers.

Working with museums and historical foundations. Many museums and historical foundations have education components. Licensed teachers are sought to work in these departments.

Private tutoring companies. Companies that provide tutorial services for students look for licensed teachers. Sylvan is one company that frequently employs licensed teachers.

Some licensed teachers, particularly those who have earned the master's degree, are hired to work in training facilities for organizations such as the military or businesses. These teachers often design lessons for others to deliver.

The license to teach is also prerequisite for the following careers:

Licensed teachers who wish to pursue becoming a school administrator, including a principal, supervisor of instruction, or superintendent, will need to take classes and field experiences to allow them to earn additional credentials to become administrators. But classroom teaching experience is critical to success in these areas.

School counselor. Licensed teachers who wish to pursue becoming a school counselor, including high school guidance counseling, will need to take classes and field experiences to allow them to earn additional credentials. But classroom teaching experience is critical to success in these areas.
