Teacher Preparation

Admission to the Teacher Internship (Student Teaching) Semester

  • Students should apply to the Teacher Preparation Office for an internship (student teaching) position one full semester in advance of internship enrollment.
  • All teacher preparation courses must be completed before the internship. No additional courses should be taken during the internship semester, except for students pursuing a master's degree who will take CPSC 580.
  • Application forms are available in the Office of Teacher Preparation, Ratcliffe 125.
  • The application for the teaching internship must be filed with the Associate Director of Field Experiences prior to the internship semester.
  • Students seeking to be admitted to the teaching internship semester must be enrolled in the Teacher Preparation Program.
  • Licensure and Placement Graduates of the Teacher Preparation Program may apply for a Virginia Teaching License by filing Form DA-034 with the Office of Student Teaching. In order for a student to be recommended for a license, a grade of at least C must be earned in the teaching internship. Throughout the program, the applicant must have demonstrated competencies necessary for successful teaching. An applicant must also present passing scores on the Praxis I and Praxis II examinations, evidence of having taken the VCLA exam, as well as evidence of having undergone training in child abuse/neglect reporting. Those seeking an elementary education license must also take the Virginia Reading Assessment (VRA). During the teaching internship semester, students in the Teacher Preparation Program compile a portfolio.

Partnership with Newport News Public Schools
Newport News Public Schools , an award-winning school district, has partnered with CNU to provide numerous practical experiences in local area schools. This means that you will engage in field experiences with practicing teachers even before student teaching. In addition, you will be very familiar with the school system in which you will student teach.

Student Teaching in Panama

CNU MAT students have the option of completing half of their student teaching experience at Balboa Academy in Panama. Students currently enrolled in the MAT program will receive further information about this opportunity in the fall of their 5th or graduate year.
